Why are we going?
Our hope as a College is to develop our students in a corporate sense where students recognise the needs of others and more importantly, respond to and serve those needs. Engaging our students in a program which aims to educate the students about the need in our global community, as well as providing them with an opportunity to respond with practical service is an important part of focus on service.
As a Christian College it is our desire to demonstrate the practical outworking of our faith and model service to our students and College community. In the book of James we are reminded that ‘Faith without action is dead.’ and that ‘we should not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.’ We aim to provide an education which prepares our students to become successful, contributing members and leaders of the community.
On our overseas Service Trip in 2015 to Cambodia, we will partner with two organisations: Sunshine Cambodia and The Tabitha Foundation.
Sunshine Cambodia
The Sunshine Centre for Children is a Christian Care for Cambodia project in Southern Phnom Penh, serving poor families and promoting appropriate care for children in the context of families in the community. They have seen that just focusing on children's needs is not enough to guarantee them a better future, they need to involve their whole family. They want to see the whole family develop and stay intact, and so the children go home to their families every night.
Each family is visited regularly by staff and every two months all the parents and care-takers are invited to come to the Centre for a time of fellowship and sharing of news. They update parents and care-takers on the happenings at the Centre and also take the opportunity to teach them different aspects of health, hygiene, parenting skills, and child protection. The children also take pride in acting out short skits or performing songs.
• Providing a Centre for children that is healthy, safe, fun and supportive, enabling families to nurture and care for each other
• Holistically addressing the physical, emotional, spiritual, and creative needs of children
We support the centre through a regular sponsorship program, as well as raising additional funds to help with the costs associated with the Centre.
Tabitha Foundation
The Tabitha Foundation was established in 1994, and aims to reach out and improve the lives of the poorest of the poor people in our world, especially in Cambodia, through its well-developed programs. The main programs that the Tabitha Foundation runs are:
· Family Development and Personal Savings Programs in order to help families save what little they can so they can purchase trade equipment and
· Building houses for those impoverished and homeless
· The Cottage Industry which helps bring income to these families by selling handmade products made by the people
· Building wells for the community to have access to drinking water
· School development program
The Tabitha Foundation is dedicated to providing help to the poorest of the poor people in Cambodia through works and programs funded by generous donations.
We support the Foundation by bi-annually committing to raise funds to pay for and send a team of volunteer students and teachers to help build houses for those in need. This year we will build ten houses.
